Teacher Grant Program Now Accepting Applications

The Pet Care Trust's (http://www.petsintheclassroom.org/about)Pets in the Classroom program (http://www.petsintheclassroom.org/) is now accepting grant applications for the 2013-2014 school year.  Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade teachers in both private and public schools who desire to introduce a pet into the classroom or already have a pet in the classroom are welcome to apply.

Many school teachers have very limited resources for the support of classroom animals, which is why the Pet Care Trust believes in supporting teachers with this educational grants program. Through the Pets in the Classroom program, teachers can obtain a grant for the purchase of new pets, pet environments or pet food and supplies for existing classroom pets. Teachers can apply for a direct, no-hassle grant through the Pets in the Classroom website (www.PetsintheClassroom.org). The program offers 7 different types of grants, giving each teacher the opportunity to choose which grant is right for him or her.  Grant options (http://www.petsintheclassroom.org/grant-app/choose-a-grant/) include:

·         Rebate Grant in the amounts of $100 (for small animal or birds) or $150 (for reptiles or fish) for purchases at any pet store;

·         Sustaining Grant in the amount of $50 to maintain an existing classroom pet;

·         Petco Grant, which provides coupons for the live animal, pet habitat and supplies purchased at Petco;

·         Petsmart Grant, which provides coupons for the live animal, pet habitat and supplies purchased at Petsmart; and

·         Pet Supermarket Grant, which provides coupons for live animal and pet supplies purchased at Pet Supermarket.

New for 2013-14:

·         Pet Supplies Plus Grant, which provides coupons for live animal and supplies purchased at Pet Supplies Plus Stores, and

·         Petland Discounts Grant, which provides coupons for live animal and supplies purchased at Petland Discounts Stores.

The grant program began in 2010 and has awarded 22,793 grants to teachers through the 2012-2013 school year.  With a goal of introducing 5 million children in 100,000 classrooms to pets and the benefits they provide, the Trust hopes that the 2013-2014 school year will see a large number of grant applicants.

Steven T. King, Executive Director of the Pet Care Trust, commented, "The newly redesigned Pets in the Classroom website makes it easier than ever for teachers to apply for a grant and to find the resources they may need to select the right pet for their classroom."

The Pets in the Classroom grant program benefits students by teaching them responsible, long-term pet care at an early age and providing the psychological and developmental benefits associated with the human-animal bond.  Studies have shown that caring for pets has a positive effect on children, improving school attendance and teaching children responsibility, as well as encouraging nurturing and building self esteem.

The First Dog Boarding and Training Facility in the Country

With temperatures hitting their summer highs, leaving a pet at home can make owners worrisome. Hollywood Dog Training School has the cooling mist systems and shade trees to keep dogs cool.

During the summer, it’s important for dog owners to keep their pets cool. That’s why America’s longest-standing boarding facility has equipped its grounds with 200 high pressure misters throughout their spacious grounds. Started in 1927, Hollywood Dog Training School has worked with countless dogs, and learned the best way to care for them. Pets at the dog boarding facility can be kept cool while their owners are at work or on vacation.

The large open facility is thoroughly covered with 20 expansive trees, so dogs can stay in the shade. The program keeps dogs and humans comfortable during dog training and obedience training classes. As the name suggests, Hollywood Dog Training School offers dog boarding and training for dogs in the greater Los Angeles area and suburbs. The dog training staff averages 15 years of experience and works with 30 to 50 dogs a day. This level of experience, dog-to-trainer ratio, and comfortable surroundings creates an easy environment for dogs to learn.

The Los Angeles Dog Boarding facility has also grown to include cat boarding as well. Owner Rick Karl explained how the addition of Kitty City came about, “People would drop off their dogs and ask if we knew any places where they could take their cats. Today there is even an entire building dedicated to cats; soundproofed so the cats aren’t bothered by the dogs.”

For the past 85+ years, Hollywood Dog Training School has been a leader in dog boarding and training. In that time they have created an environment where dogs and cats can be comfortable away from home. The cooling mist system is just the latest in their list of innovations. More information about pet boarding and training services can be found at www.hollywooddogtrainingschool.com

Alice Birney Elementary Garden Program sponsorship

One San Diego company is “digging in” to more than just real estate: Tomea, Inc. Consulting, a comprehensive commercial and residential real estate and consulting agency, announced its sponsorship of San Diego’s Alice Birney Elementary School’s Garden Program for 2013, kicking off on March 1st.

Tomea, Inc., situated in San Diego’s Banker’s Hill, will provide funding to Alice Birney Elementary School’s Garden Program in the winter and spring months; for total of 33 weeks out of the school year. The funds will enable one lower grade (K-3) and one upper grade (4 & 5) to actively participate in the program.

Like many schools, Alice Birney fell victim to the State’s ongoing, structural funding problems, threatening the school’s ability to continue its fun & educational Garden Program.

“We knew we wanted to give back to a local school, but we were overjoyed to see that our contribution would go to a program that is so unique and special to both the students and teachers,” said Melania Mirzakhanian, Director of Operations at Tomea, Inc. Consulting. “After visiting the Alice Birney campus to see and hear for ourselves how important the Garden Program is to the students, we’re looking forward to watching how the garden, and the students, progress over the next year. This goes hand in hand with our Green Building efforts at Tomea,, Inc.”

Alice Birney Elementary is recognized as an International Studies Magnet school. Through structured & guided inquiry, technologically enhanced classrooms, and special classes, the school provides a wide range of learning experiences to students, grades K – 5. In the garden, students learn about and grow a variety of plants, fruits and vegetables, depending on the season, and utilize them in their very own cafeteria. The program also incorporates composting as a valuable soil amendment that provides nutrients to plants, soil stability, erosion control and more.

“Our Garden Program is a way to give students a different, hands-on way to learn about responsibility, hard work and the environment, outside of the classroom,” said Amanda Hammond-Williams, Principal at Alice Birney Elementary. “Unfortunately, since it is one of the add-ons to our regular curriculum, this program is one of the first things to get cut when the budget is low. It’s sponsors like Tomea, Inc. that allow us to enrich our students’ overall learning experience with lessons and skills that cannot be taught in the classroom.”

Tomea, Inc. will continue working with the PTA and Friends of Alice Birney Foundation to carryout the sponsorship and see out the sponsorship. Alice Birney Elementary School is located at 4345 Campus Ave. in San Diego, just a few miles from Tomea, Inc., and is noted for having a highly diverse student body.

Tips to keep your pets safe in this summer heat

Veterinary Education Network (VEN) offers tsips to protect pets in this summer heat.  These are great tips to provide to clients and friends of animals.

1.       Fresh Water!!  Just like people, pets need water to stay hydrated.  The hotter it gets, the more water they’ll drink.  Watch for still water sitting as algae and mositquoes are breed quickly in the heat. Check on the water supply several times to ensure they have enough water.

2.    Leave pets at home!  Don’t ever leave your pet in the car!  Even if your windows are open, the temperature in the car can sky-rocket in a matter of minutes, making this a very life-threatening situation.  Go the extra mile to take your pet home before running in to the store.

3.    Limit exercise.  When you take your pet for a walk, try not to over-exert them.  Also, try to take the walks during a cooler part of the day and keep them in the shade as much as possible.

4.     Grooming but don’t cut the hair down to the skin—it should be cut to approximately 1 inch length so they still have protection from the sun.  Removing some of the excess hair will make your pet cooler. Pets also can get sunburned so use pet friendly sunscreen.

5.    Avoid  walking your dog on blacktop or asphalt.  The ground can be hot and can burn your pet’s naked feet!

6.    Recgonize the signs of heat exhaustion. Here’s a helpful hint from the ASPCA: “Symptoms of overheating in pets include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. They can also include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomit along with an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees. Animals with flat faces, like Pugs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. These pets, along with the elderly, the overweight, and those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.”  If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms, consult a veterinarian immediately!  It’s better to be safe than sorry!

Veterinary Education Network (VEN) delivers high impact continuing education and the tools that help you boost productivity, strengthen employee commitment, and improve bottom-line profits for your veterinary business.

VEN's mission is dedicated to helping DVM's achieve their professional goals while improving the quality of life for people, the planet and pets through quality education and industry.   Go to www.VeterinaryEducationNetwork.com for more information.

TransGard Systems releases list of Worst Animal

Every year, climbing animals cause outages at U.S. substations that affect hundreds of thousands of customers and cost millions in repairs, man-hours, and lost business. The TransGard team, which has installed its patented animal-prevention fencing at more than 2,000 substations, selected this year’s list from among hundreds of outages that plagued every region of the country.

Squirrels remain a prime culprit for outages at unprotected substations, but snakes, raccoons, domesticated cats and other climbing animals have also caused outages and significant equipment damage, leaving homes, businesses, schools, hospitals —even military bases — without power. This year’s list, in date order:

1 .Traffic nightmare    More than 1,527 homes and businesses in Syracuse, N.Y., were without electricity on the morning of February 22, when an unknown animal made contact with a substation. Blacked out traffic signals created havoc for early morning commuters.

2.  Exploding reptile    In early May, more than 14,000 people lost power in Oklahoma City when a snake crawled into an Oklahoma Gas & Electric substation and caused an explosion.

3.  At ease, troops    Service members at Joint Base McGuire-Dix in New Jersey experienced a power outage in mid-August stemming from a groundhog or a raccoon crawling onto transformers, seriously damaging four expensive high-voltage insulators.

4.  Class dismissed   In October, an equipment malfunction caused by an unknown animal at a Public Service of New Hampshire substation knocked out power for the entire University of New Hampshire campus in Durham.

5.The high cost of one curious cat    On Dec. 8, a ringtail cat got caught between the conductors in a UniSource Energy substation in Havasu, Ariz., knocking out power to thousands. Worse, officials had problems getting the substation back online because of “expense and safety reasons.” Each transformer cost an estimated $2 million.

These outages represent a fraction of the widely publicized (and unreported) animal-caused outages at U.S. substations. For more information about how patented TransGard fences eliminate substation outages caused by climbing animals, visit www.transgardfence.com.

About TransGard Systems    TransGard’s patented fencing was developed exclusively to eliminate substation outages caused by climbing animals. Since it was founded in 1990, TransGard fences have been installed at more than 2,000 substations in the U.S. and Canada, and as far away as South America. The New Revolutionary Orphek V5 Matrix Led Chip

The new and revolutionary Version 5 matrix LED chip is now available for the new DIF 100 series of LED Pendants.  Years of laboratory experiments conducted by Orphek has led to the development of the ultra efficient V5 multi-chip.  Each and every LED in this LED matrix was carefully designed and tuned to provide the best light for coral color and extremely fast growth.

Orphek’s major goal in this new LED project was to increase the lumens per watt in the lower spectrum range which appears darker to the human eye’s receptors. This lower spectrum range is also the range that chlorophyll A depends on to provide the necessary nutrients that corals need to survive and grow.  Without chlorophyll A, corals will not survive.

A word about lumens; a light source emitting a power of one watt of light has a luminous flux of 683 lumens.  This of course depends on the wavelength lumens are measured at.  The 683 figure would be the result if the wavelength were 555nm.  Green LEDs have the highest lumens per watt because they are in the 555nm wavelength range.  Although the lumens rating are high, this wavelength serves no useful for growing corals.  Orphek uses no green LEDs in their LED Pendants.

Orphek goal was to increase the Lm/watt in the 410-430 range by 15 times which provides more than enough intensity in this spectrum range for chlorophyll A which is very important for corals to survive and grow.  The spectrum in this range does not appear bright to the human eye and if too many LEDs in this range are used, the aquarium will appear dark.  With Orphek’s new white UV/violet LED, this is not the case, the intensity will not decrease.

The new Orphek LED matrix chip will also provide spectacular coloration of your corals with the increased intensity level in the lower spectrum.  Common off the shelf UV/Violet diodes provide about .2 to 4 lumens per watt.  With the new Orphek Version 5 LED matrix chip we have increased the intensity by up to 60 lumens per watt.  This advanced innovation allows us to use more UV/Violet diodes to raise the intensity shown in the above spectrum without the downside of having a dull blue looking display while still providing the demanding light requirements needed for Chlorophyll A to flourish.

The new and revolutionary Version 5 LED matrix chip will be available in several customized Kelvin temperatures; 16K, 18K, 20K, or any Kelvin temperature ranging from 3K to 25K.

Version 5 is another milestone in Orphek’s ongoing superior LED technology which continually offers improvements in the LED process and in the spectrum corals best respond to.  Version 5 also adds a few cyan 490nm LEDs for further enhancement of coral fluorescence.

Orphek can also provide a customized V5 LED matrix chip to meet any customer’s application needs.  On request, Orphek will provide to each customer, a unique spectrograph of the V5 Version they have chose.

In tandem with the design and development of the V5 super chip, Orphek has also designed and developed the V5 Super Actinic Chip.

This specialized chip is a member of the Version 5 improvements and was developed by Orphek to complement older metal halide lighting technology.  The Orphek Super Actinic Chip, installed in our DIF Pendants, will eliminate the need for fluorescent lighting technology presently used with metal halide systems to provide actinic light.  The Orphek Super Actinic Chip provides excellent actinic range while reducing power usage, heat, and yearly lamp replacement of other lighting technologies used for this purpose.  It will further enhance the shimmer effect which fluorescent lamps do not provide.

The Super Actinic Chip can also be used in association with Orphek Daylight LED Pendants in large systems to increase the intensity of actinic light entering the aquarium.

Varmint Defiant Trash Can Cover

This heavy, all steel trash can cover device sits on top of your steel trash can and will keep unwanted pests out of your trash. Designed for the US Forest Service for use in campgrounds and park areas, the Model VDT-32 Trash Can Cover also has applications in any other public park area where people and wildlife mix.  Wildlife is a welcome sight in any public park setting. That’s part of the reason people visit our parks. But when that wildlife gets into your trash cans you’ve got a big mess and a big … expensive … problem to clean up. This can be a health hazard for both wildlife and humans.

The Pilot Rock Model VDT-32 Varmint Defiant Trash Can Cover is designed to put a lid on your trash can, and keep the small varmints … like raccoons … from getting inside.  The all steel cover is hinged to a 3-1/2 inch diameter steel support post. A human can pull the release lever and then tip the cover back to lock it open. The steel trash can (optional) can then be set into the retainer ring. Use removable trash bags if you desire. Release the lock and set the cover back down onto the top of the steel can. The cover is too heavy for small animals to dislodge. When a park patron wants to deposit some trash, he pulls the front door open. This door plate extends into the throat of the cover.

As the door is pulled open the plate closes the throat of the cover. Not even a person can reach into the door and down into the trash can. Put the trash inside the door and let it close. As the door closes the interior plate goes down and the trash drops into the trash can. Simple. Easy. And varmint free. All steel components are powder coated in your choice of colors.  (Note: this product is not rated to be bear proof. Larger bears may be able to crush your metal can. For bear proof trash and recycling receptacles refer to the Pilot Rock Model BPR-36.)

Twyford-based Millgate Homes recognised by local community

Twyford-based house-builder Millgate Homes has been recognised for its work in the community, picking up an award from the Twyford Village Partnership.

Millgate Homes was presented with the ‘Environmental Award’ for the work which it completed for Twyford Age Concern last month. The garden at Age Concern was in need of an overhaul. After hearing of its plight, Millgate Homes stepped in to help.

As well as funding some of the work, Millgate Homes helped to coordinate the project, which took four weeks to complete, by organising for some of its suppliers to donate their time and materials. Where it had previously been just a lawn, the new landscaped garden now includes a paved walkway, seating area, water feature and beautiful plants, which members are now able to enjoy.

Marc Taylor, commercial director at Millgate Homes, collected the award at the ceremony. He comments: “We were honoured to receive this award. Being a member of the local community, we are committed to playing our part in supporting other organisations in the area.

“Having worked with Age Concern before, when we helped to fund and build a conservatory last year, we know how much having this garden means to the members and how grateful they are for any help which they receive. This is why we were happy to take on the project.”

The award will now take pride of place among Millgate’s other accolades which include a recent win for ‘Best Family Home’ at the Evening Standard’s New Homes Awards 2012.

VEN announcing-national immunization awareness month-it's a matter of life or death for your pets

TX-August is national immunization awareness month. This event provides an opportunity to remind the community of the importance of immunization. Immunization is one of the most significant achievements of modern medicine in public health. According to the Centers for disease control and prevention, tens of thousands of people in the United States still die from preventable diseases every year. Many animals also succumb to preventable diseases. Make sure that your family, including your pets, is the latest on their immunizations.

The provision of routine vaccines is the secret to a healthy life of the dog. Vaccination will keep your pet healthy and strong, protect and prevent the horrible diseases like rabies, infectious hepatitis, canine distemper, canine Parvovirus and Corona virus from affecting your dog. These diseases are capable of crippling nervous system of dogs, most of them fatal, and if left untreated the disease rabies can be transmitted to people via the saliva. Rabies is a fatal human disease. Dogs get these vaccines for years, and this has led to a decline in overall incidence of canine infectious.

As provided for under national health department keeping your dog vaccinations current is one of the essential duties of guardian dog. After the first series of vaccinations for puppies or older dogs with unknown vaccination history, revaccination is recommended every 3 years. Too much vaccination leads to suppression of the immune system and can lead to serious health problems is only the vaccinations for diseases that are prevalent in your geographic region. Keep a regular schedule of vaccinations and wellness check with veterinarian family that can help control a dog individual needs.

Immunizations also apply to cats as well. Every Cat, regardless of whether it lives in a room at any time, must be vaccinated based on guidelines recommended by the American Association of Feline practitioners. Kittens should be vaccinated in six to eight weeks of age to call veterinarians basic vaccinations that are given in the series:

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), aka, the distemper is a potentially fatal virus in young cats. FPV causes vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, fever, or sudden death. Kittens born to mothers with the FPV can suffer permanent brain damage if they survive.
Feline viral respiratory disease complex (FVRDC), aka, the feline herpes virus and Calicivirus; Rhinotracheitis affects the cat's airways, causing a runny nose and eyes, sneezing, sores in the mouth, food concerns and possible blindness. It is very easily spread from cat to cat. While the vaccine does not prevent infection, it has been shown to reduce the severity of the disease.

Rabies: rabies Symptoms differ in every animal, but the disease is almost always fatal and can be transmitted from animals, animals and people. Rabies cases are on the rise in indoor cats in the United States and some States and localities mandate that all cats be vaccinated against rabies. Vaccinations against rabies may be provided annually or every three years.

·         As a rule, organized a series of four injections FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis Calicivirus panleukopenia) ranging in age from six to eight weeks, three weeks apart, with annual vaccinations FVRCP given annually thereafter. Some veterinarians may recommend non-core vaccines, such as Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).

Medical needs for cats older than six are different from their little friends; Thus, many veterinarians recommend cats older than six years had two physicals a year to screen and the early detection of many common problems. Cat of this age are prone to diabetes, renal (kidneys), arthritis and joint problems, thyroid problems, dental diseases or hearing and vision problems. Many older cats develop as they age can manage, if caught early and treated.

Cats live longer due to advances in technology, improvements in medical treatment and greater awareness in the PET loving community.

Vertical Gardening - 3 Problems Solved

Vertical gardening is one of the latest trends in growing plants, but it comes with its problems. Urban gardeners with limited space are flocking to the concept of growing vertically, yet they quickly discover that containers can be heavy, soil can dry out and water can leak out of the planter ruining the area around it.

Although there are negative issues associated with vertical gardens, many problems can be avoided if gardeners know what to do. Below are 3 common situations and possible solutions.

1. Heavy Containers

A vertical garden may be no heavier than its horizontal counterpart, yet when hung vertically, it can put strain on the supporting structure. In the case of a weak wood fence, this may not necessarily be a good idea.

To avoid this dilemma, gardeners can use a number of smaller planters spaced evenly apart over a wide area to appear larger. Shallower planters that hold less soil, like gutter gardens, can eliminate a lot of weight as well. Drought-tolerant succulents don’t require much water, which lighten a vertical garden considerably.

Some long or tall structures can be placed on the ground and then leaned up against a wall or fence, such as a pallet garden. This takes a significant amount of weight off of the supporting structure. Alternatively, potted plants can be hung or set on leaning ladder shelves.

2. Dry Soil

Plants grown in small containers in full sun tend to dry out quickly. Urban gardeners who grow their own fruit and vegetables run across this situation.

Setting up a regular drip watering system can help keep soil moist without overwatering. Another strategy is to add vermiculite to your soil. This additive helps retain moisture in the soil. Vermiculite can be found at any gardening center.

3. Water Leaks

Traditional potted plants drain water at their base, which can be contained in a saucer. Vertical gardens can drain from the back, sides or base, and this can wreck walls and fences plus make a mess on a patio or deck.

To circumvent this problem, waterproof backing like plastic sheeting can be attached to open garden containers affixed to a wall or fence (ie pallet gardens). Alternatively, these planters can be affixed to a trellis away from the wall.

Another method to control drainage is to divert water from upper planters to lower planters, as done in a zig zag gutter garden. Attaching a drip line or pvc pipe to the base of garden can also divert excess water to a specific location. Some vertical gardening containers like Wooly Pockets use materials designed to contain water while providing a breathable environment for plants.

With the right equipment, planting materials and planter design, new gardeners can bypass common problems and grow healthier plants with less work.

Free Showing Of Food Patriots

Village Homesteading Mundelein, a local non-profit group, will host a fundraiser, and rally for Local Food by screening a rough-cut of the movie Food Patriots at Mavericks Bar and Grill on Monday, December 17, 2012 at 7:30 p.m at 2061 W Maple Ave, Mundelein, IL. The screening is free and open to the public. Emmy award winning director Jeff Spitz will be present.

When filmmaker Jeff Spitz’s son, a UW-Madison football player, came down with a food-borne illness that didn’t respond to antibiotics, it was a wake-up call that raised serious questions about food and our food systems. Jeff Spitz weaves his family's humorous story of planting a garden and raising chickens into a tapestry of stories about people who are changing the way Americans eat, buy and educate the next generation about food. Explore personal stories that show ordinary people taking control of food and creating healthier lives, a less polluted environment, a new sense of community and new jobs.

Local Food Patriots can help complete the film by contributing to the Food Patriots Kickstarter campaign at: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1646079133/food-patriots-a-journey-into-the-good-food-movemen

Village Homesteading Mundelein is a group of like-minded people that have come together and are creating a non-profit to support and foster sustainable practices in our local communities. We also educate in urban homesteading practices and self-sufficiency.

Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV), a.k.a., Distemper is a potentially fatal virus in young cats. FPV causes vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, fever and/or sudden death. Kittens born to mothers with FPV can suffer permanent brain damage if they survive.
Feline Viral Respiratory Disease Complex (FVRDC), a.k.a., Feline Herpes Virus and Calicivirus; Rhinotracheitis affects a cat’s airways, causing runny eyes and nose, sneezing, ulcers in the mouth, trouble eating and possible blindness. It is spread very easily from cat-to-cat. While the vaccine doesn’t prevent infection, it has been showed to reduce the severity of the disease.

Rabies: Signs of rabies are different in each animal, but the disease is almost always fatal and can be spread from animal to animal and to humans. Rabies cases are on the rise in indoor cats in the United States and some localities and states mandate that all cats be vaccinated against rabies. Rabies vaccinations may be given annually or once every three years.

Generally, a series of four FVRCP injections (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis Calicivirus Panleukopenia) is given beginning at the age of six to eight weeks, three weeks apart with an annual FVRCP vaccination given annually thereafter. Some veterinarians may recommend non-core vaccinations, such as Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).

Medical needs for cats over the age of six are different from their younger friends; therefore, many veterinarians recommend cats over six years of age have two medical checkups per year screen for and catch many common problems early. Cats of that age are susceptible to diabetes, renal (kidney) failure, arthritis and joint problems, thyroid problems, dental diseases and/or hearing and vision issues. Many problems older cats develop as they age may be managed if caught early and treated.

Cats are living longer due to advances in technology, improved medical treatments and greater awareness in the pet-loving community.
