Pet Speciality Agency launches to help marketers reach this affluent and emotional, unique market

Four Paws PR has launched in Sydney to service the massive pet industry with an annual revenue of $8 billion and growing.  It has continued to grow during the GFC, ranking 117 out of 498 industry sectors well ahead of wine manufacturing and not far behind copper ore mining. Four Paws PR was established by pet owner and lover, Louise Lees, who has over 25 years experience in media and marketing.  Lees saw a major opportunity to utilise her love of pets and passion and experience in media and marketing. 10 percent of client fees is being donated to dog and cat rescue groups in Australia.

“I own and love pets and this is such an exciting market, it has evolved into so many aspects of our lives especially as we increasingly view pets as a valued member of our family. “said Lees. “We want to provide PR services to pet related companies but we also want to provide specialist advisory services to non-pet related companies.  With over 63% of Australian homes owning at least one pet, brands can’t ignore this major market.  If they don’t accommodate pet owners in their advertising and product development then they will miss valuable opportunities” continues Lees.

There’s the massive spend on food, veterinary care and accessories.  But this has expanded as pets now have their own Facebook page, Twitter account, there are day care businesses, pets travel with us, eat organic pet food, lounge on luxury furniture.  Lees believes this offers major opportunities for brand extensions. The automotive industry is ahead of most others and it should be considering that 16 percent of Americans buy cars with their dog in mind and the data is very similar in Australia.

“Marketers have to get out of the mindset of how they may view pets. Owners have a completely different attitude and marketers have to get into the pet owners mind to be able to reach them effectively” says Lees. Women are the main carer and purchaser for pets and Lees says that when marketing to women pet owners, it's important to remember they are a community, a unique community. Typically, the major carer of the pet is female, married with children, living in the suburbs and most likely employed.

Research of over 80,000 women surveyed, over 80 per cent spend more on their dog than on their partner. "Women in this community are as emotionally attached to their pets, for the most part, as other women are to their children.  There dog is just like a kid to them.' says Lees. Four Paws PR is launching the first ever Greyhound Awareness Campaign in September to increase the community’s understanding of the true nature of the Greyhound. Greyhounds are Gorgeous Month is running from 1 to 30 September nationally with the objective of increasing the level of fosterers and adopters of Greyhounds.

Really thank you for participating in our survey of planted area 2 held over the weekend! The number of hectares of maize in 6 States alleged to prevent the plant was 290,000 hectares larger than last week's research, while the cultivated area should be planted originally intended to bean decreased from 80,000 hectares of corn.

Driving the corn plant hectares was Minnesota now prevent in Iowa 1.305 million, in 626,682 and in North Dakota, 501,700 hectares. Research this week in relation to the intentions of the early spring:

Nature Illuminated: Flora and Fauna from the Court of Emperor Rudolf II (Getty Trust Publications: J. Paul Getty Museum)

The court of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II produced nothing more amazing than the Mira calligraphiae monumenta, a brilliant demonstration of two arts--calligraphy and miniature painting. The project began when Rudolf's predecessor, Ferdinand I, commissioned master calligrapher Georg Bocskay to create a model book of calligraphy. A preeminent scribe, Bocskay assembled a vast selection of contemporary and historic scripts.

Years later, at Rudolf's behest, miniaturist Joris Hoefnagel filled the spaces on each manuscript page with insects, fruits, flowers, and other botanical images. The combination of word and illustration is rare and, on its tiny scale, constitutes one of the marvels of the Central European Renaissance.

Nature Illuminated reproduces forty-one pages from the original codex. Those who love and collect beautiful books will be endlessly fascinated by Hoefnagel's imagery and invention. The accompanying commentary identifies and explains the details of Hoefnagel's exquisitely crafted illuminations.

Sun Pet Announces Rare Aberrant Triggerfish From Bali For Sale

Sun Pet announces rare triggerfish available for sale from Bali, Indonesia. Rare fish collectors now have a chance to own the aberrant Trigger.

The saltwater fish is believed to be an Xanthic Undulate Trigger (Balistapus undulates) that was recently collected in Lombok Strait, a strait connecting the Java Sea to the Indian Ocean.  The fish was collected using a hand-net method and was found approximately 6 miles off-shore at a depth between 50-65 feet, surrounded by typical Undulate Triggers.

The rare fish is approximately four inches long and displays a predominately light yellow body, white face, and bright orange-colored fins, tail and markings around the eyes and mouth. These markings are atypical from the standard markings found on the B. undulates trigger, making this fish a very unique find.

Barry Wisebram, General Manager of Sun Pet, explains that “on very rare occasions these types of aberrant species are collected and offer opportunities that rare fish collectors wait for.”

Sun Pet is a live fish and animal wholesaler and is offering this fish wholesale to tropical fish retailers, public aquariums and educational institutions. Wholesale Only.

A preview of cholesterol and sharp sharks

It all started with a woman of 32 healthy years with an LDL (or "bad" cholesterol) of 14, a disconcerting read a normal LDL is about 100. It turns out that she has an inherited gene from his mother and father, a mutation of the double dose that confers the advantage. Pharmaceutical companies have now begun a race to develop a drug that mimics the effects of the mutation. Large trials will still be necessary until either drug comes to market, but for now the researchers have experimental drugs that push cholesterol to levels unprecedented, apparently with any serious side effects. The pharmaceutical companies are eager to begin production. "The race is to see who can make it," said the head of research at Amgen to The New York Times.

Forever Amber

A 23 million years an unknown species of lizard has been found in Chiapas, southern Mexico, so perfectly preserved in amber that each tiny digit 1.8 animal inches long is clearly visible. Discovered a few months ago, can now be seen in the Museum of amber in San Cristóbal de las Casas. It is far from being the oldest creature found in amber, embalmed mites 230 million years ago and found in the Italian Alps in 2012 currently maintain that distinction, but a specimen as complete as this one, with the soft tissue intact, is rare. Scientists believe that it is a member of the family of anOLE, common lizards with a friendly behavior: they eat cockroaches and are sometimes kept as pets, reports of popular science magazine.

A shark with a slap in the face

Thresher sharks in the waters off the island of fisherman in the Philippines eat sardines by slapping them with their tails, stunning or killing them. Simon P. Oliver and his colleagues in the thresher shark research and conservation project photographed the fish since it launched a "bait ball" of sardines, pointing their heads down and broke its own tail, creating a column of bubbles. The sharks which then made a 180-degree turn, presumably to find and consume the results - dazed and easily edible sardines. The technique was successful only about a third of the time, but when it worked, it was always at a dinner of more than one of the fish. "The evidence is now clear," Dr. Oliver writes in an article published in PLoS One, published on Thursday. "Thresher sharks actually hunt with his tail."

“Many people don’t realize how different cat trees can be from one another. In fact, cat trees vary widely in terms of quality, material, and yes, even performance. Higher-end cat trees tend to be made out of materials like faux sheepskin and other fabrics that cats love to run over with their claws. Meanwhile, lower end cat trees may fall apart after just a few days of use. We aim to sell cat trees that offer the best blend of affordability and quality.”

TailsPetSupply.com sells more than just cat trees. The website also features a selection of pet products for dogs and cats, including everything from pet food storage containers to vehicle harness devices. Visitors can simply fill up their cart with put supply items and check out using PayPal, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and other verified payment methods.

Crab without network

The other method is easier and more realistic for most of us who do not live near the coastal waters of the Atlantic: buy some. For this weekend cooking, get picked crab blue, pasteurized, refrigerated Callinectes sapidus, known as the beautiful swimmer Salado - in the market, jumbo lump or backfin, an American combine meat. The most famous Blue Crab fishing in the world is located in the Chesapeake Bay, but the crabs are caught North of there and South to the waters of Florida.

One pound will make for dinner for four, although there are people who can eat a single pound. These people can take their own dinner. Crab is expensive. It is also rich. You could make crab cakes, extending the flesh with the mass of cookies or bread crumbs, tying with egg. But a bigger, better summer use of crabmeat is dressed simply and pair the result with Greens in a salad, or to heat in butter and cream, smell with Sherry and serve with toast.

For the salad, I turned to the British chef and restaurateur April Bloomfield, whose bantamweight Oyster Bar in New York sometimes serves a slightly spicy crab salad with Arugula and tender chicory fall known as puntarelle. Here we have exchanged the Greens for a mixture of Endive, chicory real and Ají de Holland who used to the more accessible jalapeño. The result accentuates the sweetness of the crab, with a cunning fire under it.

For creamier version, I went into the machine in a way behind a recipe of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, the writer of Florida and fan of cooking that won a Pulitzer Prize for his novel "The Primal" in 1939. His "Cross Creek," 1942, is a tribute to the food of rural Florida made by high wasps in an era overshadowed by war. The book celebrates peace and a lot of times that passing fast: much, much butter cream. His cooking, he wrote, is "on the rich side. "I do not recommend some dishes from daily consumption." It is also very good.

Crab Newburg was the most famous dish of Rawlings, one in which claimed laurels as a cook. It is a version of the recipe for the famous 19th century lobster popularized in Delmonico in New York.

What is an easy business, both a set and a recipe. Crab meat in a huge amount of butter from heat, thicken slightly with flour, much thickened with cream and eggs and cut fat (a little) with spices and alcohol. The resulting pink stew was served with points of toasted bread or in a puff pastry shell, perhaps with rice and absolutely with a green salad with a tart, Lemon Vinaigrette. Rawlings admits he could use less cream or less butter or less eggs. "Brandy can be omitted," cautions, "but never the Jerez."

You'll want to set everything right before dinner so you can work quickly and serve the dish directly from the pan. Newburg is not a dish that is well seated. Thick in the Center. Slows way down. Rawlings advises strong for on how to prevent home cooks. Once you have the soft and hot sauce, writes, "warned guests to drink your last cocktail or highball." Then adds: "Add sherry. Beat the eggs".

His is the recipe for writing for the "Thin Man" movies, William Powell and Myrna Loy. The results are no less welcome. Bloomfield dish is light and adapted to a season of beach lunch or dinner warm twilight. The acidity of the Greens, crispy and fresh from his time in an ice bath, goes well with the pungency of the Ali-Oli garlic and perfectly complements the sweet crab.Served with a white wine of reinforcement. And as Rawlings writes about his Newburg "wait and praise."

Ken Price: 'Zoo'

The sculptor Ken Price (1935-2012) is taking a long time New York thanks to splendid surveys of his sculpture in ceramic radiant color at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and his various works on paper in the center of the drawing. There's a third show, small and peculiar, that should not be missed in the Franklin Parrasch Gallery, whose price's 1994 exhibition began a streak of seven shows again until 2003, when Matthew marks Gallery began to represent the price of work.

Combine objects and works on paper, especially since the 1960's, "Zoo", as this show 23-work loan is appropriately subtitled, examines care price of reptiles, amphibians and other nonmammals, particularly snails and tree frogs but also turtles and lizards, as subjects and as inspiration for his art. The show also highlights the power of suggestive shapes, sex and regeneration which, however abstracted, runs through almost all the work of price. For this reason, "Zoo" a great starting point for larger performances. It includes the first of their glasses of snail, a glass of 1965 in Orange deep a form of palette which fixes a small ceramic snail purchased. For another Cup of a frog, this made by the artist - seems to be fitting with the Hill on which the Cup rests while also serving as an identifier.

In detailed studies of the color of their cups titles, price stipulated species: poison arrow and Chinese frogs and turtles. But a drawing of the unusually phallic "Von Bayros snail cups" less by nature that is inspired by the work of Franz von Bayros (1866-1924), an Austrian artist specialising in erotic images that was equally inspired by these creatures without shell.

D.N.A. back Lore in pre-Columbian dogs

These are Carolina dogs, and although they are friendly, one can feel at the moment are different from other dogs. Many rush to the door, his full-length moving forward. Other off sprint and take position - the ears of Jackal fully erect, their tails of hook twitching like flags in a stiff wind. A black puppy inconceivable far in presentation strange eventually leading him in an underground Lair, dug until she does not see it again.

Walking in the pen is dangerous for only one reason: one of defined habits dogs is digging snout pits or holes of gallons on the ground, perhaps as a result of larvae or chewing the soil of nutrients.

"Is like a moonscape," Mr. Anderson warns as we tread carefully into the undergrowth.

Some Carolina dogs still live in the wild, and locals have thought much time were one of the few races that preceded the European arrival in the Americas: "Our native dog", as Michael Ruano, another enthusiast who often works with Mr. Anderson, said. "United States natural dog."

Now, a new study of canine DNA performs folklore. A team led by Peter Savolainen at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden has reported that several dogs of breeds in the Americas, including the Peruvian without hair, the Chihuahua and the Carolina dog - lack some genetic markers of European origin, which suggests that they arrived in a previous migration from Asia.

The study also revives the long debate about where and how the dogs were domesticated. Current theory speculates that they are descended from wolves that somehow came to be attached to humans perhaps 12,000 to 33,000 years - an early friendship that has a long pedigree in human folklore. (Think of Romulus and Remus).

But where it may have happened to not completely settled. Some say that dogs first emerged in the Middle East. Others point to an area south of the Yangtze River in China. Dr. Savolainen study provides further evidence for the hypothesis of China and therefore supports the idea that the first domesticated dogs crossed the land bridge of ice age known as Beringia about 12,000 years ago.

Carolina dogs, then, could be followers of field to wander from their masters paleo-Indian and took up residence in marshy areas where can hide easily out of their natural predators.

Encounter with a puppy

The Mr. Anderson, 79, is a Virginian who moved to South Carolina in 1961. It is a bummer man dressed in comfortable blue stretch pants, a pair of Crocs in his feet and a headband to hold hair down to his shoulders to stubbornly maintains some reflections of Rubio.

He remembers the day in the Nixon administration, when he had his first encounter with these wild dogs. Down by a water well near their land, he spied a mother and three cubs, and immediately bolted.

"Two of the puppies were this and a puppy tried to leave the West and it got stuck," he explained. Took the puppy at home and named it tadpole.

Not long after a stranger saw the dog and offered to Mr. Anderson $300 so their neighbors called a "wild dog Lynches River". It rejected the offer, thinking, says now, "If is worth $300 to you, then worth you $300 for me".

Mr. Anderson soon learned that others called dogs of Carolina, name given to them by I. Lehr Brisbin, a biologist with plant nuclear power in Savannah River, near Aiken and the man most responsible for now in the race. In the 1970's, Dr. Brisbin was checking wildlife in the periphery of the plant and wine often these wild dogs in parts swampier your domain. He admitted some and today remains an area of 18 hectares, where it has its own package.

Dr. Brisbin got the Carolina dog recognized by the United Kennel Club and was the first to describe some rare traits of the breed, including tail hook, pointed face, some of Lupino and the habit of digging holes in the snout. Dogs work together as a package when they hunt a field mouse or a rabbit, possibly using its white rump as signals.

"That white hook can be raised as a deer white tailed and can flash back and forth," Dr. Brisbin, explained. "I saw do it, and I saw the rest of the package of honor."

Carolina dogs generally go into heat once a year, like wolves, rather than twice, as had domesticated dogs. Cover up your scat pushing dirt over it with their noses, not using their hindquarters to scratch the floor.

However, determining just what is and is not a Carolina dog requires a kind of instinct. Mr. Anderson, is "I do know when I see it"; Dr. Brisbin is stronger.

"Carolina dog is a breed created by Brisbin," he said, referring to himself in the third person, "choosing dogs likes, the type who thinks that they typify the ancient dog."

The SILK Program Launches its Inaugural Heroes Campaign

The SILK Program, a non-profit corporation based in Johns Creek, Georgia, organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes to 1) raise funds for those helping animals in need, 2) increase awareness of animal welfare issues, and 3) teach about the many ways that animals benefit people is pleased to announce its inaugural Heroes Campaign.

SILK is launching its Heroes Campaign to honor individuals and families that donate their time and effort to shelters out there on the front line doing amazing things to help animals in need.  Shelters that we have personally verified are doing good work, yet struggling to survive. For its inaugural campaign, SILK is honoring Lynn Donovan and her family, volunteers for Castoff Pet Rescue of Blairsville, Georgia. Lynn's experience working with this shelter is extraordinary.

Therefore, SILK is honoring Lynn Donovan and her family as our initial Heroes of the Month and has established a campaign to raise $5,000 for Castoff Pet Rescue, the shelter they work with, to help defray their ongoing veterinarian fees. SILK is so excited about this inaugural Heroes Campaign that it is donating the first $500 to kick off the effort!

Castoff Pet Rescue of Blairsville, Georgia, is known as the 'shelter of last resort' in this region. Castoff serves those animals in most need of help - dogs and cats hit by cars, shot, found starving or suffering from heartworm. They even save pregnant animals and allow them to raise their young. Castoff also saves many animals in this region from death row by rescuing them from “kill shelters” and transporting them to the northeast to loving forever homes.

Castoff has extended the reach of their shelter through volunteers offering foster homes; but donations don’t always cover their costs. Their vet bills alone can exceed $5,000 each month. SILK's initial Heroes Campaign has been established to raise $5,000 for Castoff Pet Rescue to help cover these costs.

The cows are too special! Is cow appreciation day, 15 July

TX-veterinary training network (Fri) gives idea how to celebrate cow appreciation day.  Every animal deserves a day of its own to appreciate its existence and special place in our world. Cows (http://aipl.arsusda.gov/kc/cowfacts.html) are no different. They are the source of dairy products and meat for most of society. In fact, it is estimated that they provide about 90% of the dairy needs of the world, but it's interesting enough can only give milk for the first time since giving birth.

Cows are more than food and they are smart in their own way. Are wonderful mothers and work together as a loving family in many cases. In India it is considered sacred (http://hinduism.about.com/b/2009/04/27/why-is-the-cow-sac ...) and are an important part of many herding cultures, no matter their place in folklore (http://socyberty.com/folklore/bull-and-cow-in-religion-my ...) and mythology (http://www.oocities.org/highbrowcow/myth.html), together with the tori (http://www.mlahanas.de/Greeks/Mythology/BullMythology.html). In some areas of the world cow dung is used as an important source of fuel and electricity, which makes them much more than an "animal".

Unfortunately, many cows in the United States are inhuman to provide food for humans.  To appreciate something is to fully understand the ' worth. There will never be a mutual sentiment towards cow's worth in our world, but take a moment to see their impact on our lives and how to eventually treat them as a living being is a step in the right direction.

If you have the space, one of the best ways is to teach children the cows is joining 4-H.  The cows are large, docile creatures that can live on a decent sized grazing, snack on grain, grazing on grass and provide your family with about eight liters of milk every day. This is enough for drinking as well as for making yogurt, cream, butter and cheese. Best of all, the milk is raw meaning is packed full of helpful bacteria otherwise absent in pasteurized milk.

4-H is an organization that teaches youth how to select and breed livestock animals like cows. Find a local livestock 4:0 club near you and register your child. Take pride in their cow and calf project as they learn to care and show their animals.  Go to www.4-H.org for details.

Here's a quick guide to take a healthy cow and calf pair begins which is an essential element for a great 4:0.

1. search and select a race that you feel would be best suited to your family's needs and the amount of land you have. The two most common breeds are Holstein and Jersey cows cows. Other varieties include Dutch belted, Guernsey, Milking Shorthorn, Dexter and Ayrshire. Factors to consider for each breed including size, temperament, the supply of milk and power requirements.

2. locate a dairy cow type you're looking for and inquire regarding whether they are selling every cow and calf pairs.

3. inquire about the reason for the sale. Typical reasons for include cow's temperament, loss of a breast, poor production, disease and age. Check the cow for signs of lameness. In general, we suggest that you find a cow that produces about 30 pounds of milk every day and that was erased by a veterinarian to be free of the disease.

4. Ask to watch the cow is led on a halter, managed and milked. Some cows I find it very fun to aim their kicks the bucket of milk; This vaccine should be avoided.

5. Inquire about the exact age of the cow and where they are in their cycle of lactation. Ideally the cow should be between two and four years. If the cow is at the end of its cycle of lactation, means that has been milking for almost a year and a half, then that is going to produce less milk. These cows are ideal because they tend to be offered at a special price and once you produce another calf will produce abundant milk again.

6. inspect the calf for signs of health. Things to look for are the eyes, playful activities and curiosity. If the calf seems lethargic, soft eyes, trouble breathing or has a big pot belly, is unhealthy and should be avoided

Cows are beautiful creatures. Appreciate what they bring to our lives. Is something about MOO!

Susan Werner pays homage to American agriculture and his Iowa farm roots with HAYSEED June 25, 2013

Dubbed by NPR, as the "Empress of the Unexpected", singer/songwriter Susan Werner confirms his reputation as an artist as mutable the time with their newest recording HAYSEED.   Homage to American agriculture and its farm roots of Iowa, Werner again keeps its audience guessing and laughing at the same time, lending his wry humor and passionate voice for issues such as farmers ' markets, pesticides, climate, drought, longing for a sense of place and the movement for sustainable agriculture.  The characters and the prospects are varied and colorful, the lyrics are as prickly Thistles, music is a rollicking hayride of a listen!

Listeners will recognize Werner American roots, first heard in country/blues 2011 dyed "kicking the Beehive;" However, the collection of documents that appear in HAYSEED comes even closer to home. "Everything was mandolin and banjo and bass and violin," she says. "A sound that is as-forgive the term, but it finally applies-organic as a sound can begin." Released in Mango dog and distributed through thirty Tigers, the album itself was commissioned at the University of Nebraska lied Center For The Performing Arts and the Institute of agriculture and natural resources and the whole project started with seed money from fans during a successful campaign of PledgeMusic.

Werner fans encouraged with unusual rewards as signed farm corn cobs of his people, and a percentage of the money raised was donated to three charities of agriculture; Practical farmers of Iowa in Ames, organic and sustainable education service of the Midwest (Moses) of Spring Valley, Wisconsin and of the Land Institute in Salina, Kansas.  Known for his engaging and energetic live show, Werner will be adding another homemade aspect to their tour schedule HAYSEED — making appearances in local farmers ' markets across the country.

HAYSEED was produced in Boston, songwriter and producer Crit Harmon (Lori McKenna, Martin Sexton, Mary Gauthier, Ed Romanoff). "I chose Crit to produce because it is a composer himself, and that was very important for me," says Werner. "And also because he grew up on a farm in the Midwest and meets the business end of a wagon.  I knew that would be the spirit, the sense of humor and sense of place in these songs. I also knew he would mount a large cast of musicians, and this is a list of a list of players of the Boston area. " This cast includes the legendary guitarist Duke Levine, upright bassist Marty Ballou, double genius Steve Sadler and Red Molly Laurie MacAllister on backing vocals.

"Crit totally picked up when I said that this must sound like it is being played on the front porch of a farmhouse," Werner continues. "I wanted this thing almost as turned off as someone could endure.  I mean, Dubuque was the big city, where I grew up, and that is about as urban, like the sound of this album could get and still be faithful in Delaware County, Township, section 14 Prairie. "

In HAYSEED, Werner employs his songcraft and signature wit to offer a variety of songs as hilarious as they are insightful. "There is a certain sense of humor that goes along with agriculture, because things always don't come out the way you hoped," says she. "If you can't laugh about it, you can be the wrong line of work."  Opener "City Kids" sets the tone for the record with an ironic comment about what Werner refers to as "revenge of the Nerds". "The truth is that if you grew up on a farm, you always felt a small square, a little backwards," she explains. "But times change and turn tables.

And who pays $ 25 a pound of organic pork these days? Is not the farmers, people. " A banjo and upright bass accompaniment, Werner practically spits out the phrase in the title: "all the children of the town, they had cute little dogs, a dog that sits and begs, a dog with all four feet, does not smell like pigs." The crazies herbicides "folk" is an instant classic campfire. "Pesticides are a fact of farm life, but I didn't know quite how to handle it.  This seemed like a new approach ".  The reflective, "something to be said" is the heart of registration-which turns out to be a heart suit, in fact.  "I did a series of concerts in rural Nebraska, and this girl sent me a note saying, ' thank you for coming to this waste of cornfields, '", says Werner.

"It struck me-took the wind out of me, really-that this girl felt this way about where she was growing. I had to find a way to say, boy, Listen, you are with the view of something. It took me years to see it, but I really see it now. " A melodic motif Slinky presents the "Egg Money," a tune that charts the tale of revenge in a shrewd farm wife. Other highlights include the joyful Hayseed, sexy fun "Bumper Crop," the silent and "Silver Star" plant, dedicated father of Werner and the heartbreak of twice-dyed "while you wait for the rain.  The album closes with "Ode to Aldo Leopold," a song in tribute to a man now recognized as one of the founders of sustainable agriculture.

After starting his career with the release "Midwestern Saturday night" in 1993, his second record "live at Tin Angel" impressed executives at private/BMG Music, who released their acclaimed debut record last of the Good straight girls "" in 1995. She also received praise from critics for their subsequent recordings "time between trains" (VelVel, 1998) and "new nonfiction" (Indie, 2001).  She has toured the country with acts such as Richard Thompson, Keb Mo and Joan Armatrading and was featured in a Peter, Paul and Mary 1998 PBS special as one of the best of the next generation of popular composers.

HAYSEED is the fourth in a series of concept albums, starting with 2004 's "I can't be new," which features original songs in the style of Cole Porter and George Gershwin, followed by "the Gospel" in 2007 and "classics" in 2009.  country-blues in 2011 with "Kicking The Beehive" hinted at this turn to the countryside.

1. Search and choose a breed that you feel would be best suited to the needs of his family and the amount of land you have. The two most common available breeds are Holstein cows and Jersey cows. Other varieties include Dutch belted, Guernsey, milking Shorthorn, Dexter and Ayrshire. The factors to consider for each race include the size, temperament, milk production and power requirements.

2. Locate a farm with the type of cow that you are looking for and check to see if they are selling any cow and calf pairs.

3. ask about the reason for the sale. Typical reasons for sale include temperament, loss of a cow udder, poor production, disease and age. Check the cow for signs of lameness. In General, you will want to look at a cow that produces about 30 pounds of milk per day and has been cleared by a veterinarian to be disease-free.

4. ask to watch the cow being led a halter, manipulated and milked. Some cows find it very fun to point his kicks in your bucket of milk; These cows should be avoided.

5. ask about the exact age of the cow and where they are in their cycle of lactation. Ideally, the cow must be between two and four years of age. If the cow is at the end of their lactation cycle, that is, that he has been milking for almost a year and a half, then it will produce less milk. These cows are ideal, because they tend to be offered at a bargain price and once they produce another calf will produce abundant milk again.

6. Inspect the calf for signs of health. Things to watch for are clear eyes, playful activity and curiosity. If the calf seems lethargic, misty eyes, respiratory problems or have a big pot belly, he is healthy and should be avoided

The cows are adorable creatures. Enjoy what they bring to our lives. Is something to MOO about!!!!

Tips to keep your pets safe in this summer heat by Veterinary Education Network

Veterinary Education Network (VEN) offers tsips to protect pets in this summer heat.  These are great tips to provide to clients and friends of animals.

1.       Fresh Water!!  Just like people, pets need water to stay hydrated.  The hotter it gets, the more water they’ll drink.  Watch for still water sitting as algae and mositquoes are breed quickly in the heat. Check on the water supply several times to ensure they have enough water.

2.    Leave pets at home!  Don’t ever leave your pet in the car!  Even if your windows are open, the temperature in the car can sky-rocket in a matter of minutes, making this a very life-threatening situation.  Go the extra mile to take your pet home before running in to the store.

3.    Limit exercise.  When you take your pet for a walk, try not to over-exert them.  Also, try to take the walks during a cooler part of the day and keep them in the shade as much as possible.

4.     Grooming but don’t cut the hair down to the skin—it should be cut to approximately 1 inch length so they still have protection from the sun.  Removing some of the excess hair will make your pet cooler. Pets also can get sunburned so use pet friendly sunscreen.

5.    Avoid  walking your dog on blacktop or asphalt.  The ground can be hot and can burn your pet’s naked feet!

6.    Recgonize the signs of heat exhaustion. Here’s a helpful hint from the ASPCA: “Symptoms of overheating in pets include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. They can also include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomit along with an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees. Animals with flat faces, like Pugs and Persian cats, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. These pets, along with the elderly, the overweight, and those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.”  If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms, consult a veterinarian immediately!  It’s better to be safe than sorry!

Top Ag executives from ADM, CME and Tyson help steer Oilseed & Grain Trade Summit content to address

The 8th annual Oilseed & Grain Trade Summit* promises content and topics that are spot-on in the industry due to key input from an executive advisory board that spans the Ag industry from aquaculture to commodity processing to transportation and procurement.  The three-day conference, expected to attract nearly 1,000 attendees, will be held October 21-23 in Minneapolis, Minn., at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

“Every year we carefully examine the trends in the industry and collaborate with key experts to build an agenda that is content-rich and robust, with discussions led by top experts in the grain and oilseed sectors,” said Philippe de Lapérouse, chair of the summit.  Sustainability is one of the themes that will be highlighted at this year’s event through presentations entitled Sustainability in the Global Ag Supply Chain and the Implications of Water and Other Resource Scarcity on Global Agricultural Production.

An 11-member national advisory board helps steer the content for the Oilseed & Grain Trade Summit.  Members like Eric Jackson, President Ag Services, Conservis, who, for the past six years, has helped shape content and identify and connect with speakers.  Jackson said that creating connections is a key part of the value of the conference.  “There isn’t another event exactly like the Oilseed & Grain Trade Summit where all members of the food chain can come together to learn, network and develop business relationships.”

Another advisory board member, Harry True, formerly Director Commodity Operations, Frito Lay, will moderate a panel discussion addressing Trends in Vegetable Oil Usage for Food, Fuel and Industrial Applications. Commenting on his presentation, True said, “It is a responsibility and economic mission of seed development operatives, oilseed processors, and other downstream users to maintain and increase existing uses of vegetable oils and to seek to improve traits and properties to develop new uses for this asset that will improve the well-being of all mankind.”

Joining Jackson and True on the board are others from leading organizations such as AgriNetworks, INTL FCStone, Global Aquaculture Alliance and Hillshire Brands. The annual Oilseed & Grain Trade Summit brings together global commodity and ingredient buyers and sellers to examine new processing technologies, transportation challenges, and developing trends in the commodity, food, biofuels and animal feed sectors.

U.S. Sugar Recognizes Two Railroad Employees For 50 Years With The Company

U.S. Sugar Corporation President and CEO Robert H. Buker, Jr. honored two of its railroad employees for 50 years of dedicated service to the Company. “Fifty years with the same company is increasingly rare in business today, so we were particularly proud to recognize and honor Edward Brown and Jimmy Langston for their long service to U.S. Sugar, and we also honored nearly 60 others with 5-35 years of service,” said Robert. H. Buker, Jr.

Brown and Langston (50 yrs) were honored at an Employee Service Recognition luncheon for both U.S. Sugar RR and South Central Florida Express railroads held at the Clewiston Elks Lodge last month.  Also honored were Selby Reese (35 yrs); James Hardy (30 yrs); Guadalupe Paniagua, Merle Phillips, Vernon Sullivan and Bruce Wilson (25 yrs); Otha Carter, Roy Facey, Corey Ferguson and Mickey Watson (20 yrs); Johnny Jones, Franklin Kendrick, Eddie Parker, Mario Tomas and Johnny Welborn (15 yrs); Benjamin Escorcia, Antonio Rodriguez, Josue Simon, Andre Snead, Ray Holcomb, Sam Mallo, Marvin Rivera, David Romero and Matthew Wiggins (10 yrs); Douglas Angram, Adrian Arnold, Jeremy Brown, Ismael Ceniceros, Jaqurral Hale, George Hernandez, Jessie Herring, Peter Johnson, Henry Mason, Anthony Pugh, Matthew Simmons, Adan Rico and Lorenza Williams (5 yrs).

Harlem resident Edward Brown started at U.S. Sugar in 1963 as part of the “bull gang” in the Clewiston Mill, cleaning up spilled cane in and around the railcar cane dump.  He later worked as a Mechanic’s Helper and then was promoted to Mechanic.  Today, Brown is a Multi-craftsman for the U.S. Sugar railroad.  Over the years, Brown said that the building of the Clewiston Refinery and the big upgrades in the railroad tracks and equipment are the biggest changes that he’s seen in U.S. Sugar’s operations.

Clewiston resident Jim Langston’s career at U.S. Sugar began nearly 51 years ago as an office messenger. Over the course of his career with the railroad, he held the positions of Yardmaster and Engineer.  Presently, Langston is a Locomotive Engineer for U.S. Sugar’s railroad.  He says the biggest changes over the past fifty years have been the move toward world class equipment and the building of a much stronger relationship between U.S. Sugar and its workers that exists today.

“U.S. Sugar’s railroad operations delivered 33,000 tons of sugarcane to the mill every day during the 2012-2013 harvest season within 7.5 hours of harvest, an unprecedented “cut to crush” time in the Florida sugar industry,” Buker said.  “This allows us to extract the maximum amount of white sugar from the sugarcane in our fully integrated process.” “We certainly appreciate everyone’s hard work,” said Buker.

West Columbia Gorge Humane Society showcases cats during ‘9 Lives for 9 Dollars’ adoption event

Did you know there are more than nine reasons you might be healthier when sharing your life with cats, or that for $9 you can become part of a nationwide life-saving movement? Adopt a feline friend from West Columbia Gorge Humane Society, www.wcghs.org during the special “9 Lives for $9” adoption event and you become part of something important.

Come meet the adoptable cats and adolescent kittens, age nine months or older at West Columbia Gorge Humane Society.  The “9 Lives for $9” promotion will be from Friday, June 21, 2013 through Sunday, June 30, 2013 across the United States, supported by national animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society. The 9 Lives for $9 adoption event also was funded in part by PetSmart Charities®.

“For ten days in June we are making it easy for people to meet our fabulous felines who are looking to find their forever home.  For just $9 you can save a cat that could end up saving you,” said Diana Alderman, Board Member and Adoption Chair.  “Every day 9,000 animals are killed in shelters simply because they do not have a home.  Just by adopting a cat or two, everyone can be part of the nationwide movement to end the killing of adoptable, treatable animals.”

Alderman added, “When you perform the lifesaving act of adopting cats, you also improve your quality of life.  You are bringing purring balls of love into your home that can help you lower your risk of a heart attack, boost your immune system, reduce your blood pressure, and a whole host of other health benefits, too. Plus if laughter is the best medicine, cats can provide a daily dose with their antics or just snuggle up and let you know everything’s going to be okay.”

This adoption event is part of Best Friends Animal Society’s national mission of No More Homeless Pets®, which aims to end the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. West Columbia Gorge Humane Society is a participating member of the No More Homeless Pets® Network, a program of Best Friends Animal Society, offering help and support to animal rescue groups that save lives in their communities.

If interested in adopting a cat, stop by the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society cat shelter between June 21, 2013 and June 30, 2013 or visit our Adoption centers in Petsmart at 130 Southeast 192nd Avenue in Vancouver or in Petco located at 11505 NE Fourth Plain Road in Vancouver.

In 2012, West Columbia Gorge Humane Society was able to place 512 cats and dogs into their forever homes, due to the support of friends just like you.  The mission is to eliminate unnecessary euthanasia of healthy or treatable companion animals in the community and find them permanent, loving homes.

West Columbia Gorge Humane Society is located at 2695 S. Index Street, Washougal, WA 98607.
