Participants simply choose one of the contest categories, sign up before 7/31/12, and then submit their entry before 8/15/12.
Winners announced on 9/14/12. Each contest will have four prizes, ranging from $300 down to $50. All prizes are gift certificates redeemable for any product at SFGF's online store. So pick one (and only one) contest, fill out an online form, and get planting!
There are six categories: Front Yard SFG (anyone can enter, garden must be in the front yard), School SFG (teachers only, home schools, public or private schools), Company SFG (employees create a garden on company property), Church SFG (any church member or group may create a garden on church grounds), Family SFG (from kids to grandparents, gardens may be located anywhere), Master Gardener SFG (must be certified MG, with garden in a public place).
There are just a few simple rules, and entrants may read all about the contests and register online.Participants keep notes and photos during the planning, building, planting, and harvesting stages. Upon sign-up for ANY of the contests, SFGF will e-mail participants instructions on how to submit pictures and final entry, a free copy of Getting Started with SFG pamphlet, as well as Mel Bartholomew's advice on how to become a contest winner. Existing gardens will also qualify!
"If you want fresh, clean, uncontaminated vegetables right out your back door, start a Square Foot Garden this week and then enter one of our six contests to win up to $300. That will pay for your new garden the very first year and all the harvest will be FREE. SFG is the new way to garden in small spaces using raised planter boxes, needing no tools, no fertilizer, little water, and no weeds to pull.
Does it work? Ask the two million book buyers of this revolutionary method. And now it is going overseas as Square Metre Gardening to put an end to world hunger. You could be a part of that. Join this grassroots effort by entering one of our contests." ~Mel Bartholomew
Founded by Mel Bartholomew, SFGF is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, with goals to end world hunger and promote healthy lifestyles. SFG is an intensive gardening method pioneered by Bartholomew in his first book, Square Foot Gardening (1981, Rodale Press), then on his five-year running PBS TV show.
He offered 10 major improvements to his system in his updated 2007 ALL New Square Foot Gardening book. The SFG method produces 100% of the harvest of a row garden, using no fertilizer, and far less water, space, seeds, labor, tools and expense. The best part of a SFG is there are NO WEEDS!
